About

Our specially trained, highly qualified whale watching guides will take you on a 2,5 - 3,5 hour tour to Eyjafjörður - the longest fjord in Iceland. They will provide you with information about wildlife, nature, environmental issues, history and the fjord area while taking pictures that you will be able to receive after the tour.

We operate our tours on 3 big boats - specially modified, dedicated for safe whale watching encounters in Iceland. Our biggest boat is the only high-speed, specially modified, whale watching ship in Iceland. Capable of carrying up to 200 passengers with spectacular views from our “cinema styled” viewing platforms and its speed guarantees sustainable whale watching tours, wherever the animals might be located in the fjord. With ample indoor and outdoor seating, a bar, and a cafeteria, you can be sure that the ride is comfortable and pleasant, even on challenging weather days.

Meet us at the Whale Watching Akureyri ticket office by the Oddeyrarbót pier, right next to the big round building, HOF, in downtown Akureyri. You can't miss it!

What do I need to bring?

Dress warmly for our northern fjord, so if you have it, bring warm outdoor clothing like a wool or fleece sweater, some warm headgear and gloves. Flat bottom shoes are recommended.

Know before you go

Please make sure to arrive at our ticket office by Oddeyrarbót pier at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure to check in and receive your boarding pass. The boat is docked right next to the office, making boarding quick and easy.

Icelandic weather can change rapidly, so we recommend dressing in warm, layered clothing - even on sunny days - as it can be chilly out at sea. Complimentary overalls are available on board to help keep you comfortable throughout the tour.

We follow a strict code of conduct for responsible whale watching to ensure a respectful and safe encounter with the wildlife. Our guides will provide safety instructions at the start of the tour, so please listen carefully and don’t hesitate to ask questions during the journey.

Itinerary

Day 1: Check-in

Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure at our ticket office by Oddeyrarbót pier for check-in. Our team will guide you to the boat - conveniently docked right next to the office, so you won’t have far to go!

Day 1: Boarding

Board our specially designed whale watching vessel on the floating pier, right next to our office. You're welcome to grab one of our warm overalls before finding a comfortable spot on board - whether that's inside the heated indoor lounge with panoramic windows or out on deck to enjoy the fresh air and scenic views of Eyjafjörður.

Day 1: Whale Watching

As we begin sailing out into the fjord, your guide will go over the safety procedures. Please listen carefully and don’t hesitate to ask if anything is unclear - your comfort and safety are our priority.

We sail out from Akureyri harbour into the scenic waters of Eyjafjörður - one of Iceland’s most sheltered fjords and a fantastic whale watching area. On this 2,5-3 hour tour, you get to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and search for the majestic marine life of North Iceland, including humpback whales, minke whales, harbour porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins. Our expert guides will share fascinating facts and help spot whales from the decks.

Day 1: Return to shore

After an unforgettable adventure at sea, we return to the harbour where you'll disembark at the same floating pier by our ticket office. We hope your time with us leaves you with lasting memories of Akureyri’s stunning wildlife and natural beauty! If you’d like to receive any photos taken during your tour, simply email us at info@whalewatchingakureyri.is - our team will gladly share any images we were able to capture.

Now that you're back on land, why not take a leisurely stroll through the charming town centre, botanical gardens or old town? There is a fantastic selection of local shops, cosy cafés, and inviting restaurants and museums to explore.
